Chapter Six

Jeremy knew his brow was knitted as he trailed Ethan up the stairs toward the wolf who’d planted his paws on the tree trunk in preparation for continuing the hunt.

Once they were inside the house with the door closed, Jeremy reached out with his psychometry sense, seeking Will. The pup was upstairs, and there were two others with him, probably Seiji and Nicholas. For now, their son was safe.

Issei Ryoji, almost exactly Ethan’s height, squared off with his son and glared.

Jeremy moved to stand beside Ethan, but Ethan put a hand out, not taking his gaze off his father.

Refusing to show any dissention in the ranks, so to speak, Jeremy stayed where he was and waited to see what Ethan would do. But if the alpha made any move toward his mate, Jeremy would intercede.

“You bring one not of our kind here?” the alpha asked.

Ethan said nothing.

The wolf switched to Japanese, maybe repeating the question, maybe saying something else entirely. Ethan’s expression gave little away.

Except that he was ready to kill the other wolf.

Jeremy stepped slightly behind Ethan so that he could grab his lover by the shoulders if Ethan tried something so foolish.

Issei Ryoji scowled. “Well?” he demanded in English. “What do you have to say for yourself?”

“I’m here because I was requested to be here. I brought my mate and my son.”

The alpha’s expression changed subtly. He bowed shallowly. “Welcome, Masaaki.”

Was that Ethan’s birth name?

Ethan returned the bow but said, “I am Ethan Warner and have been so for over thirty years.”

Ryoji’s scowl reappeared. “You would distance yourself from your birth pack?”

“I am.”

“Then why are you here?”

“I was invited.”

Ryoji’s gaze flicked to Jeremy. “And you bring one who is not werewolf with you?”

“He is my mate. He goes where I go. As does our son.”

“And who is your son, since two males cannot a pup make?”

For the first time, Ethan hesitated.

Jeremy, unsure what Ethan was thinking, said, “He is the birth son of Firos William, raised by us these last five years.”

The alpha’s face went blank. Then he refocused on Ethan. “Go to bed. We will discuss this in the morning.” And he spun on his heel and marched out of the foyer.

Ethan glanced at Jeremy. “Please go up ahead of me,” he said softly.

Should he ask why? Should he risk an argument here? No. Showing any disagreement would make their position weaker. And Jeremy had a feeling they were on very shaky ground. Making sure Ethan was right behind him, he climbed the steps to the second floor.

* * *

Ethan watched Jeremy lift his head, presumably scenting the air. Ethan had already smelled out Seiji’s, Nicholas’s, and Will’s mingled trail. He let Jeremy find it. And when Jeremy walked in, Ethan went in right behind him, turned, and locked the door. At least their room had a lock, even if it was a simple one.

Seiji, back in human form, was sitting on the floor with his back against the farther bed. Nicholas sat behind him, massaging his shoulders.
